Composition first
Adding a frame increases the amount of space the image occupies and changes its visual weight. A wide pale border can make a dense photo feel quieter. A dark edge can separate a light product shot from a white page. A Polaroid footer creates a place for date, location, or authorship, while a film edge makes the border part of the subject. None of those choices is neutral. Review the complete framed image, not only the border control.
The live editor expands outward so the source remains intact. That distinction matters when a portrait already has a tight crop, when product packaging must remain complete, or when a landscape horizon cannot lose pixels. If your real goal is to fit an exact social or print ratio, calculate that destination first. A border can help reach the ratio without trimming the image, but an arbitrary width may leave the final asset too tall or too wide.

The gallery frame is a single uninterrupted band. Use it around editorial photography, artwork documentation, product images, presentation figures, or a profile image that needs breathing room. Paper tone feels like a digital mat; ink tone creates a contained panel; accent is best kept narrow so the color does not compete with the photograph. Polaroid
Add a short date, place, sequence number, or event title. Avoid long quotes and decorative filler. The caption should help someone identify the image after it leaves the editor.
Useful when one flat border feels unfinished. Keep the line restrained around illustrations, menus, certificates, and cards.
Perforations make the capture medium visible. Use them for contact sheets, music artwork, travel sequences, or a deliberate analog reference.

Look at the space around faces, text, products, and horizon lines. A frame is most useful when it adds separation the source does not already contain.
