The outline carries identity. On a face, that means the forehead, nose, lips, chin, hair, and neck. On a product, it may be the handle, wheel, opening, or distinctive corner. Raise the threshold only until those landmarks connect. A larger black area is not automatically a better image silhouette.
Negative space separates an arm from a torso, a chair leg from a shadow, or a mug handle from its body. If every gap closes, the result becomes a blob. Lower the edge threshold or invert the selection before trying to rescue the shape with decorative detail.
A silhouette maker works from light and dark regions. Strong subject-background contrast produces a stable cutout. Similar tones, motion blur, patterned clothing, flyaway hair, or several overlapping people can merge. A quick crop or contrast adjustment in a photo editor often matters more than another threshold pass.
Zooming in can make every edge feel important. Reduce the preview to the size of the final avatar, sticker, sign, stencil, or social graphic. If the subject still reads, the simplification is doing its job. If it does not, restore one structural gap rather than adding many small fragments.

Crop around one primary subject. Leave enough air around hair, limbs, handles, or projecting parts so the edge is not clipped.
Start near the middle. Move lower to reject light areas or higher to absorb them. Stop when the contour and essential gaps both read.
Use black for a classic silhouette, another color for a brand asset, and transparency when the shape needs to sit over a new background.
Open the PNG at final size. Check isolated specks, weak joins, cropped edges, and any hole that needs to remain open before production.
